The Judging Criteria

For the JAPAN PRIZE Contest, we are concerned with education that supports the individual's strengths through self-learning, consideration and sympathy to improve the individual's natural gifts and to build a better society.

In this contest, educational content will be evaluated based on the standard criteria that the entries should be useful for nurturing these strengths from a long-term perspective that contributes to the individual's growth and social development.

Common Rules for All Divisions

If an entry was submitted by the institution to which a juror belongs, the juror will not participate in voting.

Common Criteria Standards for All Divisions
All the entries will be judged according to whether they satisfy our standard that entries should encourage individual strengths through self-learning, consideration and sympathy to improve the individual?

Judgment concerns whether an entry has long-term perspectives and educational goals designed to contribute to individual growth.
The criteria include:
whether the entry is effective in providing new knowledge, information and/or skills
whether the entry offers guidance for reasonable thinking
whether the entry is effective in encouraging viewers/users to understand others
whether the entry is effective in encouraging sympathy for others
whether the entry is effective in providing skills to achieve a prosperous life
whether the entry has universality in educational issues and offers effective suggestions for task-solving
whether the entry uses media functions and specific characteristics efficiently
Criteria for the Each Division

Audiovisual Division

1. Pre-school Category (around 0 to 6)

1) Educational Goals
Are there purposeful and well-planned educational goals?
Are the established goals appropriate for the target viewers/users who are 0- to 6-year-old pre-school children regarding the issues of cognitive, emotional and physical development?
Are the established goals appropriate for society and the current times?
2) Content/Composition
Are the form and development of the content well-considered to offer the viewers/users effective learning opportunities or any other opportunities which have educational impact?
Are the composition, structure and procedure effective in achieving the educational goals?
3) Expression/Direction
Does the entry have originality and creativity in the construction of its expression and directional method (script; story; visual, graphic, sound and other effects/techniques; acting; characters; animation)?
Does it have artistic quality in the above factors?
Was it well-planned to interest the target viewers/users and retain their interest?
Are there any innovative ideas that make effective use of the advantages of each medium?
4) Achievement of the Educational Goals
Does the entry achieve its planned educational goals?
Does it promote the target viewers/users’ cognitive, emotional and physical development?
Is it effective in improving the behavior and attitudes of the target viewers/users by heightening motivation for learning?
5) Ease of Use
Is the format, structure and arrangement appropriate for the target viewers/users?
Was it produced with adequate consideration of the general level of cognitive, emotional and physical development of the target viewers/users?

2. Primary Category (around 6 to 12)

1) Educational Goals
Are there purposeful and well-planned educational goals?
Are the established goals appropriate for the target viewers/users who are 6- to 12-year-old regarding cognitive, emotional and physical development?
Are the established goals appropriate for society and the current times?
2) Content/Composition
Are the form and development of the content well-considered to offer the viewers/users effective learning opportunities or any other opportunities which have educational impact?
Are the composition, structure and procedure effective in achieving the educational goals?
3) Expression/Direction
Does the entry have originality and creativity in the construction of its expression and directional method (script; story; visual, graphic, sound and other effects/techniques; acting; characters; animation)?

4. Continuing Education Category (around 18 and over)

Are the established goals appropriate for the target viewers/users who are over 18 years old and seeking continuing education regarding cognitive, emotional and physical development?
Are the established goals appropriate for society and the current times?
2) Content/Composition
Are the form and development of the content well-considered to offer the viewers/users effective learning opportunities or any other opportunities which have educational impact? In particular, is the entry appropriate for use where educators or teachers are not available?
Are the composition, structure and procedure effective in achieving the educational goals?
3) Expression/Direction
Does the entry have originality and creativity in the construction of its expression and direction (script; story; visual, graphic, sound and other effects/techniques; acting; characters; animation)?
Does it have artistic quality in the above factors?
Was it well-planned to interest the target viewers/users and retain their interest?
Are there any innovative ideas that make effective use of the advantages of each medium?

5. Welfare Education Category (No age limit)

1) Establishment of the Educational Goals
Are the educational goals well-established in planning and design to support the concept of an ideal society in which those who have and those who do not have disabilities can live together in perfect harmony?
Are the established goals appropriate for the target viewers/users regarding cognitive and psychological conditions?
Are the established goals appropriate for society and the current times?
2) Content/Composition
Are the form and development of the content well-considered to offer the viewers/users effective learning opportunities or any other opportunities which have educational impact? Does it offer innovative suggestions for how viewers/users can reasonably understand the content in cases where no educators or teachers are available?
Are the composition, structure and procedure effective in achieving the educational goals?
3) Expression/Direction
Does the entry have originality and creativity in the construction of its expression and direction (script; story; visual, graphic, sound and other effects/techniques; acting; characters; animation)?
Does it have artistic quality in the above factors?
Was it well-planned to interest the target viewers/users and retain their interest?

Are the form and development of the content well-considered to offer the viewers/users effective learning opportunities or any other opportunities which have educational impact? In particular, is the entry appropriate for use depending on the availability of educators or teachers?
Are the composition, structure, and procedure effective in achieving the educational goals while sufficiently utilizing media characteristics?
3) Expression/Direction
Does the entry have originality and creativity in the construction of its expression and design (script; story; visual, graphic, sound and other effects/techniques; acting; characters; animation?)
Does it have artistic quality in the above factors?
Was it well-planned to interest the target viewers/users and retain their interest?
Is the method in which the media is utilized innovative and capable of broadening the potential of educational contents?

TV Proposal Division

1) Educational Goals
Are the educational goals designed to be feasible?
Are there purposeful and well-planned educational goals?
Do the goals deal with universal tasks of education and are they likely to be effective in solving issues in the country and/or region which submitted the proposal?
Are the goals appropriate for the target audience regarding cognitive, emotional and physical development?
2) Content/Composition
Are the form and development of the content well-considered to offer the viewers/users effective learning opportunities or any other opportunities which have educational impact?
Are the composition, structure and procedure effective in achieving the educational goals?
3) Creativity/Originality
Does the entry have originality and creativity in the construction of its expression and direction (script; story; visual, graphic, sound and other effects/techniques; acting; characters; animation?)
Does the proposal offer any attractive ingenuity for the target audience?
4) Production Process
Is production of the proposal realistic from the viewpoint of equipment, techniques and human resources and feasible within the prize money? If the proposed budget exceeds the prize money, is the reason clearly explained?
5) Assurance of Broadcast
Does the producer have a clear plan to broadcast the program if awarded?
6) Copyright Administration
Does the proposing organization take full responsibility for observing copyright clearance rules as regards the program?
