Thanks to its incredibly strong central character, Masai-girl Sabina (12), My body, my life moved the jury very deeply and made us believe, that viewers will understand the importance to stand up and take action against the insane tradition of circumcision, as it is still widely practiced in Kenya, where Sabina lives. We follow Sabina in her daily life at home and at school. Sabina has a clear understanding that the practice of circumcision is not only painful but also very dangerous and has even led to death. Sabina will not quit school, she will study, become a lawyer and fight for girls’ rights, and certainly, she will not allow for circumcision.

We are so honored receiving this award! We want to thank the jury so much, winning the UNICEF Prize means a lot to our team of Just Kids, because we are so dedicated to this course. Just Kids is a documentary series for children about children's rights. With stories from the perspective of one specific child, our goal is to inspire kids, stimulate reflection without prejudice or disapproval and to make children aware of the fact that every child has the right to be happy. Just Kids encourages kids to think and debate amongst themselves, at home or at school. The UNICEF Japan Prize is a great humanitarian initiative that perfectly matches our mission and gives us the opportunity to show these documentaries in Japan and hopefully in a lot of other eastern countries. We love to share the stories about our heroes, because that is what these kids are to us!
