Nine extremely good finalist documentaries were screened at the Lifelong Learning Category over a span of 2 days. The entries all dealt with very important social issues that needed to be told and addressed.
All the jurors were themselves passionate about Learning, Education, Media and Content. And thus, the discussions after each viewing were interesting, intense and eye-opening. Our cultural differences did not hinder the process and everyone was clear that we had a job to do, and to find the most deserving winner.
You Will Not Have My Hate is a positive approach to a very serious and important subject across the world, “terrorism”. A lovely and personal voice of the first person make the documentary powerful and intimate for the audience.
The content and form works very well together. Music and visuals are treated well. Also, a good educational piece to generate discussion. Finally, a strong piece that sells message the other media may not be able to address.
It’s well executed and connects with the audience worldwide. It’s a real story from real people.

Receiving the JAPAN PRIZE in Lifelong Learning Category is an extremely meaningful honor because one of the purposes of this documentary was indeed to show that understanding is primordial, to reaffirm through Antoine Leiris’ personal quest that our destinies are linked. After Paris Bataclan attacks, his instinct open letter to his wife’s killers raised a wave of emotion all over the world because those issues Antoine Leiris had to face were universal: how not to be scared and sacrifice freedom for security, how to stand and keep on living together again, where to find light and solutions by meeting others to build a world meaningful. With moral acuity and emotional honesty Antoine’s journey shows that we are united by the same idea:  to live fully, to fight ignorance, because we must. This award truly encourages us as filmmakers of human stories to keep on in this direction.
