For the UNICEF Prize, we chose Sleeping Lions as “the best work that promotes understanding of the lives of children in difficult situations.” This short film uses the power of fiction to tell an authentic-feeling story about a teenager struggling with her past abuse and a present threat to her sister. The film movingly depicts her internal conflict, as she considers the consequences of speaking up or staying silent. Unfortunately, child abuse happens in all countries and cultures. By awarding the UNICEF Prize to Sleeping Lions, we hope others are encouraged to speak up and offer support.

I’d like to thank UNICEF, the jury, the JAPAN PRIZE, and NHK for awarding the UNICEF Prize to Sleeping Lions. UNICEF works for the children’s rights, survival developments and protection across the world. Child sex abuse is the problem, but knows no boundaries, either financial, geographical, or social class. I’ve made this film and we believe many of the world’s problems could be solved by educating children and adults that this behavior is wrong and to take actions against it. We hope Sleeping Lions now will be seen by more young people with the hope so that they can be inspired by me a story. And take actions to help themselves for those they know are dealing with the same situation.
