Inspired by an iconoclastic Colombian teacher who passionately brings books on his burro to rural children who have no access to a library, Donkeybook Teaching English continues that passion. The program supports the teaching of English as a second language to Colombian children who are between the ages of six and nine by using Colombian culture, nature, and local references to help young children learn this second language. Usually, the teaching of English as a second language is done with the use of resources that are filled with foreign references. The jury feels that in addition to using live-action, animation, delightful characters, music and story to engage the viewer, this localized approach is significant. By doing so, the program can make the learning highly relevant, more accessible and entertaining to children in Colombia than many other more “universal” approaches.

This project was inspired by an innovative school teacher, Luis Soriano. With his library and donkey, he has brought the opportunity to learn to the children.
Donkeybook Teaching English is a way to bring a second language to the children. While learning English, the viewers also learn about nature, culture, music, through the adventures of Luis, his donkeys and two kid friends.
The support from JAPAN PRIZE gave life to our dream of producing a children’s educational program. Colombia has many regions where children can’t go to school. Donkeybook is one of the way to bring knowledge to those children. We believe that a child who is well educated can say no to war and yes to peace. On the night of the ceremony, someone said, “The best weapon in the world is the education.” We wholeheartedly agree. Thank you for support this kind of projects through the world. Thank you JAPAN PRIZE.
