The filmmaker Sunny Bergman’s documentary Our Colonial Hangover is a very brave and moving film about unconscious racism. It makes you stop and think again. Director Sunny Bergman is turning the camera on herself and those around her, as well as using interesting social and scientific experiments. She entertains us, as we are educated about the impact of prejudice. As a powerful result we are left questioning our own behaviour. We think this is an important achievement in this world where we are living.
Our jury wants to praise Our Colonial Hangover for being so brave, global, captivating, special, humorous - and talking about discrimination at the same time! Not lecturing at all! It is a bright example of personal storytelling and innovative approach. We are honored to give the Grand Prix Japan Prize to a universal story that touches every one of us: Our Colonial Hangover.

That our film Our Colonial Hangover wins such a big prize in Japan is an huge honor for our production company De Familie Film & TV, based in Amsterdam. But more important; it is prove that the debate around the figure Black Peter is something that also concerns people on the other side of the world.
In the film director Sunny Bergman analyses the debate in the Netherlands around the racist component in the attitude towards this figure. During the making of the film Bergman and her team were passionately trying to make the Dutch people aware of what they called ‘underground racism’; the unconscious prejudices that people have against skin color.
We are very grateful for the appreciation for this film and want to thank JAPAN PRIZE for both prizes. We think Our Colonial Hangover is a film that matters in many more countries than just The Netherlands.
