Teacher X is an insightful and emotional piece of work which tells the story of how a teacher inspires and empowers a group of primary students to believe in themselves and to exercise their civil rigths to make a change to their society. A powerful programme that shows “democracy in action” and truly reflects that in reality not all battles are won even if you are determined to overcome all hardships.
The jury chose this programme to be the winner in the Primary Category because of its high educational value, honesty and authenticity portrayed by the students who actively participated in the programme by exploring and learning from their failures. A simple plot that was executed so well that it emotionally touched us when we saw the students grow and develop throughout the programme.
Strong feelings and effective teaching methods come through Teacher X. We hope it will motivate other teachers and parents to entrust the younger generation and empower them to become critical thinkers.

In a healthy democratic society, civic awareness is the most important force behind supervision of government. But how do we cultivate our children’s understanding of the meaning and value of civil disobedience? Following much discussion, this lesson kicked off under the premise of “Don’t just obey, find your own answer,” even though we knew the inherent concept of “resistance” would have to bear more criticism and stigmatism. Polarizing opinions swelled after the airing of the program, including negative feedback such as “How dare PTS encourage children to revolt?”, “How can students protest when they don’t even have all the facts?” and “Children are obviously being manipulated by adults.” Does “resistance” lose its meaning in the face of such taunts? No, the courage of resistance itself is precious enough. Thanks to the JAPAN PRIZE for seeing the value of this simple show, and for providing the opportunity for it to inspire even more people.
