Title PRIVATE EYES
Country Canada
Organization National Film Board of Canada (NFB)

An excellent work that promotes understanding of the lives or circumstances of children in difficult situations.

Matthew cannot see with his eyes. However, this little super sleuth can still see everything even in the dark through sound, smell, taste, and touch, employing these senses to the fullest every day to display his incredible powers of observation. On his birthday, Matthew’s parents take him to a dog breeder to choose a puppy from a litter. To the breeder’s surprise, Matthew selects the best puppy in the brood. By presenting this “invisible” world in black and white, the filmmakers aim to visualize the world that the visually impaired live in, and thus deepen children’s understanding and eliminate prejudice regarding disabilities.

This film is an adaptation of a Gilles Tibo novel which was published by the Éditions Soulières in 1999. I kept it in my library at the NFB for about eight years, always believing that it would make a wonderful film. This story about a little blind boy who tells us what it's like to see the world with his 33 eyes moves us deeply and gets us involved. While rereading the novel, I immediately thought of taking the story to Nicola Lemay to ask him to explore the possibility of making it a stereoscopic 3D film.
The challenge in making this film was to enable sighted individuals to experience the different perception of those who cannot see by adopting the point of view of the main character. We believe that by presenting viewers with a playful and sensory experience, we will enable them to better understand the way of life of people who cope with blindness. Our thanks to the jury of the JAPAN PRIZE who believed, as we do, that, in the words of the author Saint-Exupéry, it is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye.
