In many regions in Cameroon, mothers try to delay the physical development of their daughters’ breasts, to avoid rapes or early sexual intercourse, by grinding their breasts with hot stones or using blades. Meanwhile, mothers living in villages where marriage is a priority try to inflate their daughters’ bosom, by injecting ant’s venom into their breasts. Victimized girls often have to suffer from diseases; breast cancer is the most common one, which at times leads to death, This “breast torture” has been repeatedly executed for generations by the mothers who were victims themselves. Medical doctors and NGOs have raised the alarm but yet to see success. This proposed documentary-drama calls for the improvement of the situation.

This indeed is the time for Africa…
The adolescent girls of Cameroon can now rejoice because one of their most negative cultural practices has been exposed. “Breasts torturing,” which has been shrouded in mystery for so long, have now been brought to light.
Why is it that in the western world, the mere exposure of breasts provokes a scandal, while the mutilation of breasts in our society is accepted as normal? Our documentary film will foster sufficient understanding of breasts torturing, and expose the physical and psychological traumatisms and ills of this barbaric practice. It will hopefully educate our society and contribute to stop this phenomenon forever.
As the voice of the voiceless thousands of young girls and women who face this terrible affliction, I express my eternal gratitude to NHK JAPAN PRIZE & the Hoso Bunka Foundation. What an honor to be congratulated by the crown prince of Japan! I still can’t believe it…
A future free from breasts torturing is possible for the young girl of Cameroon and from elsewhere in Africa. I believe they will be a new vision as regarding the African woman in our today’s global village. The life of a young girl should mean more than just marriage and erotic pleasure.

The inviolability of the female body is not always obvious. Women suffer from all kinds of abuse spreading from violence and rape to mutilation. There are many stories out there. One that we seldom hear is on how young girls’ breasts are manipulated and permanently damaged. The proposed film on breasts torturing will truly act as an eyeopener and a fires tarter for a debate. Hopefully, it can act as a first stepping stone for attitude change in Cameroon.
