JAPAN PRIZE 2008 List of Prize

A program that promotes understanding of the lives or circumstances of children in difficult situations.

Celebrities dancing half-naked, advertisements for teens that just look like pornography, G-strings for eight-year olds. Sexual expression surrounding us is becoming more and more explicit. Children are bombarded by eroticized information and are strongly influenced without noticing it. An expert says that girls’ first priority has become “being hot” and they “overinvest in images,” and boys, who have many role models to choose from when they are small, cannot find any models but guys surrounded by sexy women on the screen as they grow.
This documentary features an educational project involving psychologists and teachers that aims to protect children from toxic information. By introducing interviews with children and abundant clips from music promotion videos and commercials, experts analyze the current situation to bring the danger of “stealing childhood from children” to the public’s attention.
Directed toward an issue that affects many cultures worldwide, Sexy Inc speaks out against the eroticized environment confronting children today and the impact it is having on their well-being.
Through a combination of interviews with children, media clips and expert commentary, the film brings into focus a troubling issue that many adults may be unaware of or feel powerless to counter. The Jury appreciated not only the film’s unique and strong visual presentation, but the refreshing directness of experts as they discussed sensitive and difficult subject matter. In serving as a catalyst for discussion through companion resources that include a comprehensive guide available on the Internet, the program offers teachers, parents and youth concrete strategies for countering the phenomenon’s negative effects.
