A contemporary snapshot of the lives of HIV/AIDS affected young people in Britain and Rwanda. Through personal testimony, Child attempts to dispel many peoples' misconceptions that HIV/AIDS affected young people in Britain are fortunate to live in such an affluent society, asking the question, "Is life for a British teenager in some ways more challenging than for his or her Rwandan counterpart?"
Child touches upon the terrible genocide of 1994 in Rwanda when soldiers, many HIV positive, raped surviving women, exacerbating the country's critical rate of HIV/AIDS. It portrays life for affected young people in child-headed households, demonstrating the value they put on education as the means of transforming lives.
Child illustrates that in Britain and Rwanda all these young people share many common dreams and aspirations whilst living extraordinary lives with bravery, courage and hope. |
