STATGE TWO SCIENCE: Inner City - Habitats

Entered by Channel 4 Television (C4: U.K.)
Category: Primary Education
Duration: 20 min.
The program, one episode in a five-program series, focuses on the ecology of plants and animals characteristic to Great Britain.

This episode takes place at Bentworth Primary School which is located near a very heavily used highway. The location seems to be a sterile concrete jungle, overwhelmed by fumes from the highway, but if you look closely you can see a various and vigorous community of plants, insects and birds. In a small pond in the school yard, there is a hint of springtime, birds come to eat crumbs dropped by the children on the playground and a spider builds a web on a brick wall. The presenter gives detailed explanation of the ecology of a small nature garden that the students made in a corner of the school yard.

The committee believed that the program most effectively achieved its stated aims of showing how plants and animals have adapted to unusual conditions and that it reflected a high level of professionalism in content selection and production.
