Rice is a useful ingredient, because it is long lasting and merely requires water, a pot and a heat source for cooking. Trying practicing cooking rice with a gas cartridge stove so you can be prepared in case of a disaster. Cook with 1 part rice to 1.2 parts water.
- Leave washed rice soaking for 30 minutes to one hour.
Put a lid on the pot and turn on stove to medium heat. Once the water begins to boil, turn the heat to low and let cook for 10 to 15 minutes.
Once no water remains, turn off the heat.
Let stand for about 10 minutes with the lid on, to allow further steaming.
With pre-washed rice, you can skip the washing process. This would be very helpful at the time of disaster.
It is handy to remember that if you cook 100g of rice, you can make one large-size onigiri rice ball.
