Yuzuru Hanyu skates to Hana wa Saku

5 minute program

Concept

Yuzuru Hanyu, the 19-year-old gold medalist at the Sochi Winter Olympics, skated to the recovery support song “Hana wa Saku (Flowers Will Bloom)” in June 2014, to send courage and comfort to the people affected by the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake. For this special occasion, a new version of Hana wa Saku was arranged by the original composer Yoko Kanno. Fumiya Sashida performed a beautiful rendition of this song about the connections between people’s spirits over generations. In harmony with the song, Hanyu expressed through his skating the strength and kindness of human beings.

"I hope the affected people can move forward with hope. I wish that others would remember the places and people that are still struggling. This is what I felt when I skated to 'Hana wa Saku'"

Hanyu and ICE RINK SENDAI

Hanyu grew up in Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture, which was severely hit by the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011. Ice Rink Sendai is where Hanyu started skating at the age of four. He was practicing at the ice rink when the Great East Japan occurred.

The ice rink was heavily damaged by the disaster and was temporarily closed while reconstruction continued. In the meanwhile, Hanyu continued his training at various ice rinks in surrounding prefectures, despite having spent four days in an evacuation center himself.

In Summer 2011 following its reconstruction, Hanyu returned to Ice Rink Sendai, which he chose as his home rink in order to express his gratitude to his hometown.
