The devastation of buildings in the March 11th tsunami produced mountains of salt-soaked debris and dwindling places to put it. Recycling the broken concrete for use in reconstruction was thought impossible because of the eroding effects of the sea salt, that is, until a construction company stumbled on a paradox and found a way to use seawater to make concrete stronger.
