Aired: November 1, 2011Rice harvested in Fukushima and examined for radiation contamination in October is certified safe, but is still piled up in warehouses in the prefecture as brokers have failed to find buyers. Previous buyers had already suspended their usual contracts, and with revelations that radiation-contaminated beef from Fukushima reached the market, the shunning of Fukushima products has become widespread. Rice traders in western Japan are rejecting Fukushima rice outright or demanding deep discounts from producers already at a disadvantage. This program examines how the producers are coping.
