Mosaic view of the renewable future ~Renewables Global Futures Report 2013~

	Hi! This is Kumi-chan.
Recently, I was introduced to a newly published report on the future of renewable energy. It is rich in insights to understand what the future of renewable energy could look like. It was an interesting report and I want to share with you an interview I had with the author of this report.

The report, Renewables Global Futures Report 2013 (∗leaving NHK site) is the product of a collaboration between an international renewable energy policy network, REN21 (∗leaving NHK site), and a Japanese think tank, the Institute for Sustainable Energy Policies (ISEP) (∗leaving NHK site).

Upcoming NHK World program "Japan's Energy Shift ~A message from Amory Lovins~"

	Hi! This is Kumi-chan.
I am sorry for the long silence.
But I am back with follow-up news of the program I have been working on.

The program, Japan’s Energy Shift, that I introduced in my earlier blog will go on air on NHK World. This was originally broadcast on NHK’s satellite 1 and was re-edited and went on air on NHK’s terrestrial channel 1 in Japanese. Now, it will go on air on NHK World this weekend on Feb. 2, 2013. So, this time it will all be in English! For details of the program schedule, please go to http://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/english/tv/special/index2_1.html Because the viewership is global, the program will go on air 6 times on that day. So, hopefully, one of these times will fit your schedule.

	Hi! It's Kumi-chan!
I hope you all are well.
Well, it's beginning to feel the winter is here now and it seems as thought it will be a pretty cold winter this year.
Already, people in some parts of Hokkaido had already experienced a severe winter storm and the power was knocked out for quite some time. I hope their life to come back to normal soon.

Orangutans in Sumatra Island

	Hi! It’s kumi-chan.
Happy Thanksgiving to you all!
Here in Japan it’s a national holiday as well--labor Thanksgiving Day, on the 23rd of November.

I have recently worked on a TV program on Japan’s energy shift featuring a world-renowned energy specialist and the chairman of the US-based think-and-do tank, Rocky Mountain Institute, Mr. Amory Lovins. During our field production, Mr. Lovins told me he had an “extended family” in Asia and showed me the photos of them. Hmmm, I thought, extended family in Asia?! That’s interesting. Well, the family was a whole group of orangutans in Sumatra Island. They were all beautiful and looked so happy and harmless. (Mr. Lovins had a very charming way of talking about things and I, of course, giggled for his way of introducing me to his “family”.) He told me he was visiting them again after his time in Tokyo.

Seeing Tokyo from the eyes of world's renowned energy expert, Amory Lovins

	Hi, everyone!
It’s Kumi-chan!

For the last month or so, I have been working pretty hard on a TV program about Japan’s energy shift towards a renewable energy based society. We invited Mr. Amory Lovins, the world-renowned energy consultant and chairman of the US based think-and-do tank, Rocky Mountain Institute, as the host of our program. Mr. Lovins published “Soft Energy Paths” before the oil shocks in the 1970s and has been introducing key concepts to lead the world away from the dependence on fossil fuels.

Hello to the readers of the Eco Channel Blog!

My name is Yoshi Ogasawara and I'm the host for an NHK World program called Great Gear. A few days ago, Kumi-chan graciously posted an introduction to the program here, and I wanted to follow up her post with a bit more about the program and myself.

Great Gear is weekly show which started in April. On it, we introduce Japanese technologies and products. Every week, one of our reporters visits an industry tradeshow and covers the latest trends. Are you into cars? Cameras? Or how about eco-friendly products? Well, there are tradeshows for all of them, and where there's a tradeshow, there's a Great Great reporter! On our other segments, we introduce products which exhibit distinctly Japanese qualities, such as attention to detail and quality workmanship, or represent a new approach to a traditional craft. So if a story on how a centuries-old handcrafting business in Kyoto has adapted itself and is thriving today sounds interesting to you, be sure to check the program out.

Soft touch of autumn breeze

	Hi! It’s Kumi-chan.

Wow, it’s already the end of August! It’s still so steaming hot during the day but definitely the autumn is just around the corner. The sky looks clearer and clouds are higher and look like a sheer lace curtain. When I go pick up my daughter of two from her nursery school, it is already dark outside and the breeze is cooler and less humid as I pedal my bicycle. There were a couple of evenings (…only a couple, mind you…) that I opened the windows to let the cool air through in the evening, without using the air conditioner.
I found this video about home security that I thought may become very useful.

Introducing a new NHK program, Great Gear

Hi! How are you all doing? It's Kumi-chan.

Today, I want to introduce you a new program on NHK World that has been recently added to our Eco Channel collection.

Great Gear is a new program started this April on NHK World and on Digital Educational channel (only available in Japan).

Great Gear features the latest in Japanese innovations and technologies from a wide range of industries. The program is for 28-minutes and full of interesting ideas and people. It is pretty neat to see how good old Japanese traditions are applied to enhance our modern day living also.

The program is hosted by Yoshi Ogasawara .
Born in the USA, he has been living in Japan for the past 8 years. In addition to his work in television media, he is a professional visual artist.

Flutter your flag for the Olympics and flutter your towels for fluffier feel

	Hi! It’s Kumi-chan.

The opening ceremony for the Olympics in London is just hours away! I read in a newspaper that the opening ceremony will feature rain-producing synthetic clouds. Interesting stuff, isn’t it? Oh, how I wish they could bring those synthetic clouds here in Tokyo so that I could bask in a cool rain shower in this sweltering summer heat in Tokyo!!! The sun beam is so strong that it actually hurts like so many needles stinging my skin!

Anyways, today, I want to talk about towels. My daughter now plays in a small pool at nursery school and I have more towels to wash everyday. In Japan, many of us hang our clothes outside to dry, instead of using dryer. The summer sun does the job. However, there is an issue. The washing, especially towels, becomes really coarse and tough on the surface. When dried with an electrical dryer, the towels are soft and fluffy.
So, I was trying to find a way to make them fluffy and cuddly and found it right here on our eco channel site. Those of you who can read Japanese, here’s the link.

Hi! It’s Kumi-chan! How are you all doing?
It is really interesting to see what people do to weather the summer heat. This recently uploaded piece introduces “let’s dress super cool for the office” to praying for the cool summer at a shrine.

It’s really starting to get hot and humid here in Tokyo and an umbrella is a must in this season, making my bag heavier…

Last weekend, the sky looked as if it could rain any moment but I took a chance to visit “Ajisai no sato” in Kaisei-town, Kanagawa prefecture with my husband and daughter. “Ajisai” stands for hydrangea and I guess “Ajisai no sato” can translate into “home of hydrangeas”. Apparently, about 5000 hydrangeas are planted along the walkway and waterways of rice paddies and vegetable fields of 17.2ha. It was just nice to be in the midst of it all and just breathe the clean air for a change. And, we managed to take a stroll without getting soaked in the rain.

We even got a cucumber right out of the field from a nice lady who was just harvesting her vegetables there. It was a nice gesture and my daughter was just thrilled with all the soft prickles of a cucumber-sensation possible only with fresh cucumbers.

Getting ready for the summer!

Hi! I hope everyone is off to a good start this week.

Are you all starting to feel the heat of the summer?

I am starting to feel it for sure. Summer is one of my favorite seasons but the heat bouncing back from the asphalt road surface compounded by the intolerable humidity in Tokyo is something I just can never get used to.

So, in order to soften the effect of Tokyo heat, my husband has started what has become his annual ritual of creating a “green curtain” for our window – planting vegetation to block the direct sunlight. This is the third year he’s done this.

Self-sustaining, energy-efficient dream house

Hi, everyone! It's Kumi-chan. I attended a seminar last Friday on the paradigm shift from fossil fuel to renewable energy and had an interesting conversation with one of the participants during a break. She said, "solar panels, heat pumps, and all the other environmentally friendly features of a house should be presented to home buyers as options just as car buyers are presented with so many options to choose from." I thought this was a simple but very viable and user-friendly way to increase eco-housing.
