・High-performance HD News Production and Broadcasting Linking Plural Servers [NAB2007]
Developed by NHK, the high performance, HD news production and broadcasting system linking multiple video servers is used for the News Center of NHK satellite channels. This total system enables recording, editing, and playing out, and features HD nonlinear editors with powerful video effects, and SD nonlinear editors (proxy editors) for quick editing. Combining an additional standard-resolution server and a low-resolution server for PC previews makes it possible to create this server system more compact than HD servers only.

HDTV is flourishing in Japan and the US. Many other countries including those in Europe are planning to start their own services. The prospects for the1080/50p and 60p picture formats are especially bright. This report describes the visual experience that HDTV offers viewers in relation to their viewing environment. It goes on to examine trends for 1080/50p and 60p from various perspectives, including flat panel displays, production equipment, coding technologies, HDTV television sets, higher resolution technologies beyond HD, and trends in rival media.

Each day, the NHK News Center generates more than 12 hours of news bulletins and information programs for broadcast on the NHK General TV channel and the NHK satellite channels. To convert the News Center's SDTV facilities to SDTV-and-HDTV simulcast facilities, construction was carried out in stages. The introduction of the HDTV system was implemented in three major steps and completed in 2003.

・The Antarctic HDTV Broadcasting Station [NAB2005]
In 2003, NHK established an HDTV broadcasting station in Antarctica, the first broadcasting station ever to be established there. More than 150 live programs including a broadcast of the solar eclipse were successfully presented, and the spectacular natural scenery including ethereal aurora and violent blizzards fascinated many viewers. This report covers one year and four months in the history of the Antarctic HDTV Station, including preparations and operation.
