NHK STRL Open House 2009
  “The Never-ending Evolution of Television”

NHK Science & Technical Research Laboratories (STRL) will hold an Open House for four days, from May 21 (Thurs.) to 24 (Sun.). This year marks STRL’s 63rd Open House. Based on the theme of “The Never-ending Evolution of Television,” the exhibit will feature 37 latest research development of the Laboratories.

The Open House will introduce R&D activities aimed at achieving the goals of the NHK’s Three-Year Corporate Plan as well as activities with a view toward broadcast media of the future.
It will feature groundbreaking tests of Super Hi-Vision multi-channel transmissions from Sapporo in Hokkaido and Kashima in Ibaraki Prefecture, using the high-speed Internet test satellite “WINDS” (Wideband InterNetworking engineering test and Demonstration Satellite). Live images will be transmitted from the observation deck of the Sapporo TV Tower, 90 meters above the ground.
A wide range of other exhibits will be offered in this single venue, including an “Integral 3D TV” that achieves natural 3D images without the need for specialized glasses. The results of research in Digital Terrestrial Broadcasting will also be presented to respond to visitors’ questions and concerns about the full transition to digital broadcasting scheduled to take place in just over two years.

During the weekend of the 23rd (Sat.) and 24th (Sun.), NHK staffs will provide guided tours with easy-to-understand explanations of the various exhibits.
