NHK digital terrestrial broadcasting began on December 1st, 2003.

These digital broadcasts have the following features;
- Hi-Vision (NHK's HDTV system) broadcasting with high-definition quality pictures and high-fidelity sound
- Data broadcasting which gives viewers access to information whenever they need it.
- Interactive service which enables viewers to participate in programs through quizzes, questionnaires, etc.

Digital terrestrial broadcasting will start in all prefectural capitals by the end of 2006, and the number of households who can enjoy the service is expected to reach approximately 38 million (80% of all households in Japan)

All of Japan's TV channels will be digitalized by July 2011.

New service of digital terrestrial broadcasting for mobile reception will also start in April 2006.

Thanks to digital technology, it will make possible the reception of remarkably clear sound, images and text on mobile phones any time, anywhere even while on the go.

We will also see continuous improvements in Integrated Services Digital Broadcasting (ISDB), which is a future form of television broadcasting proposed by NHK.
