1989/06 NHK BS broadcasting service started In 1989. NHK launched the world's first full-scale analog satellite broadcasting service (BS). As of 2006, the number of NHK BS viewing households exceeds 18.8 million.
1996 The digitization of satellite broadcasting using communication satellites (CS) began in Japan.
2000/12 Digital broadcasting via broadcasting satellite (BS) was launched. This new service paved the way for HDTV broadcasting, which provides high-quality images and high-fidelity sound. The launch of digital satellite broadcasting subsequently enabled major Japanese broadcasters to commence seven HDTV channels for the first time in the world.
2005/08 The number of households viewing digital BS exceeded 10 million, making it one of the most successful new media.
2006/12 The number of households viewing digital BS exceeded 20 million.
