Outside Broadcasting Technologies

NHK has also made a number of breakthroughs in outside broadcasting.

NHK has developed Low Bit Rate High-Definition IP Encoding System in collaboration with manufacturers to enable easy live reports from any location. The system is lightweight, compact size for portability and compresses HD signal at a few Mbps in real-time.

NHK used a 60GHz-band wireless transmission system to send HDTV signals from the rail camera at the Turin Winter Olympics speed skating track in near-real time, allowing live switching between the rail camera and other cable-connected cameras.

NHK also developed a hemispherical Luneberg lens antenna system for Hi-Vision transmission via communication satellite, ideal for mounting on a news van reporting from the scene.

A Hi-Vision digital wireless handheld camera system offers new possibilities for news and sports broadcasts. The system is designed to transmit live HDTV signals to a receiver up to 500 meters away in a line-of-sight link.
