How is Hi-Vision being used? (Production advantages)

Cinema Ready

Hi-Vision is well-suited for cinema applications. Movies can be produced in a shorter time and at less cost by shooting and editing in Hi-Vision, and then transferring to film. George Lucas, James Cameron, Robert Rodriguez and other internationally acclaimed directors have used HDTV in movie-making. Hi-Vision can also be used to show television programs in theatres. The latest projectors allow clear, sharp Hi-Vision images to be projected onto large screens. These advantages are why HDTV is attracting interest in the movie industry. NHK has co-produced movies in Hi-Vision with some of the world’s top directors and released the film versions in movie theatres. Examples include Russian Ark, a co-production with Russian director Aleksandr Sokurov, which features a continuous take lasting 90 minutes, a technique that would be impossible with traditional analog film. Another example of cinematic Hi-Vision is DELAMU, a documentary co-produced with Chinese director Tian Zhuangzhuang.
