  • NHK Special – International coproduction "Blue Planet"

(Comments by Yukinori Kida, Executive Director of Broadcasting)

The "Blue Planet" NHK Special, which depicts the world's oceans using the highest-quality footage, will be broadcast in a three-part series from May to July. Underwater filming technology has advanced rapidly over the past decade. Crews can now spend five times longer underwater, while the noise of breathing equipment no longer scares sea creatures away, allowing for greater chances to capture footage. The technology of small-scale cameras has advanced to make it possible to shoot from the perspective of the sightlines of underwater creatures. This series, made in cooperation with Britain's BBC, was shot over four years and documents the world's oceans, providing a look into unknown aspects of sea creatures. The stage for the first part, to be broadcast on May 6th, is the great ocean. The program features impressive footage of how living creatures survive in this harsh environment, known as the 'blue desert', where nutrition is in short supply. Part two, which will be broadcast in June, will feature coral reefs and the underwater forests of seaweed, while part three in July will portray the life-and-death drama of the battles between land and sea creatures.

  • On the deliberation on the 16th of this month of the government's regulatory reform promotion council

The issue of broadcasting and the internet was highlighted and we intend to continue following the deliberations carefully. Talking in general terms, for example, Clause 4 of the Broadcast Law, which stipulates political neutrality and that reporting must not distort the facts, is I think something that news and other programming should uphold. NHK's broadcast guidelines state that we should maintain independence and autonomy, along with being accurate, fair and balanced and NHK will continue to broadcast news and programs in a responsible manner with guidelines as in the past. If in the future we are called to give our input, we will express our opinions.
