A Review on the Education of Journalists:

Retraining of NHK Reporters as a Case Study

Ippei Omata

I extend my heartfelt condolences to the victims of the massive earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan on March 11th and deepest sympathy to the survivors of this unparalleled disaster.
Under these circumstances, some may argue that now is not a time for exploring the education of journalists, but I do believe it is meaningful to discuss this topic all the more because journalistic attitudes is most called into question at a time like this. That is why I decided to releases this article on education of journalists, the basis of journalism, this.

An NHK reporter’s information-leak case prompted triggered retraining of reporters within NHK. I will outline the current conditions of the training and introduce how outside journalists and former NHK reporters perceive “retraining of reporters” and “education of journalists,” based on which I will discuss challenges accompanying “retraining of reporters” and specifically how “education of journalists” should be provided.
