September 2005

Broadcasting environment around the world is dramatically changing, with advanced technologies such as digital compression having facilitated satellite broadcasting and with roles of broadcasting being reviewed along with dissemination of the Internet.

On 26 May 2005, NHK Broadcasting Culture Research Institute and the International Planning & Broadcasting Department of NHK co-hosted the International Symposium commemorating the 70th anniversary of NHK's international broadcasting “The Era of Global Broadcasting in the Midst of Diversification and Multi-polarization” held in Chiyoda Broadcasting Center.

The panelists consisted of:
Richard Wald, Professor, Graduate School of Journalism, Columbia University, USA,
Richard Porter, Editorial Director, BBC World News TV, UK,
Hussein Y. Amin, Professor, The American University in Cairo, Egypt,
Sumiko Iwao, Professor, Musashi Institute of Technology, Japan, and
Toshiyuki Sato, Director-general, International Planning & Broadcasting Department, NHK. Yoshinori Imai, Chief Commentator of NHK, hosted the discussion.

The symposium generated an over two-hour lively discussion over media circumstances in the Middle East and the United States and of opinion journalism. The September edition of the NHK Monthly Report on Broadcasting Research provides a summary of the discussion reduced by about half due to space limitation.
